Care & Maintenance
OPIECE porcelain tableware is created to be used, touched, served from, and lived with. Each piece is handcrafted in Latvia and shaped through an architectural approach to porcelain - precise, geometric, and intentionally tactile. Some surfaces are glazed, while others remain unglazed to reveal the natural texture of the material and the depth of colour created by pigment mixed into the porcelain mass itself.
Porcelain is durable, but it is still a refined material. With considered care, your OPIECE pieces will keep their form, surface, and character for years to come.
ESSENTIAL CARE GUIDELINES
1. OPIECE tableware is designed for serving and everyday dining.
2. Wash with care, by hand or in a dishwasher on a gentle programme.
3. Allow each piece to dry fully before storing.
4. Store in a dry place with some air circulation.
5. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
6. Avoid metal scrubbers, abrasive detergents, and harsh cleaning tools.
7. Take care with unglazed surfaces, notably around oils, coffee, tee, wine, berries and other strongly pigmented foods.
8. Stack gently. Porcelain is strong, but it should be handled with attention.
OPIECE tableware is made for domestic use, dining rituals, serving, and presentation. It may also be used in curated hospitality settings, but intensive high-frequency professional kitchen use may shorten the lifespan of the pieces.
FAQ
CAN I USE OPIECE TABLEWARE ON A STOVE?
No. OPIECE porcelain tableware is not designed for use on a stove, open flame, electric hob, induction surface, or any direct heat source. Sudden and concentrated heat can cause thermal shock and may damage the porcelain.
CAN I USE OPIECE TABLEWARE IN THE OVEN?
We do not recommend using OPIECE pieces in the oven. The collection is designed for serving and dining, not for baking, roasting, or heat-based food preparation. To protect the shape, surface, and longevity of the pieces, avoid exposing them to high heat or rapid changes in temperature.
CAN I USE OPIECE TABLEWARE IN THE MICROWAVE?
We recommend avoiding microwave use. Although porcelain as a material may sometimes be microwave-safe, OPIECE pieces are sculptural objects with varied forms, thicknesses, glazed and unglazed surfaces. Repeated microwave use may shorten the lifespan of the piece or affect the surface over time. For best care, use OPIECE for serving rather than heating.
CAN OPIECE TABLEWARE BE WASHED IN A DISHWASHER?
Yes. OPIECE porcelain tableware is dishwasher safe. We recommend using a gentle programme, moderate temperature, and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive or highly aggressive dishwasher products, as these may cause unnecessary wear over time. After washing, allow the pieces to dry fully before placing them in a closed cupboard or stacking them. This is especially important for pieces with unglazed surfaces, where trapped moisture may remain longer.
IS HAND WASHING RECOMMENDED?
Hand washing is always the most gentle option. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid metal scrubbers, hard brushes, and abrasive powders. For pieces with angular forms, handles, or raised details, wash with care around edges and corners. Dry with a soft cloth or leave the piece to air dry completely before storing.
HOW SHOULD I STORE OPIECE TABLEWARE?
Store OPIECE pieces in a dry place with some air circulation. If stacking plates or bowls, place them gently and avoid dragging one piece across another. For extra protection, especially with larger pieces or pieces with unglazed surfaces, a soft separator may be placed between stacked items. Avoid storing pieces while damp.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF CUTLERY LEAVES MARKS?
Cutlery marks can appear on glazed ceramic surfaces over time. In most cases, these are not scratches in the porcelain, but fine metal deposits left by knives, forks, or spoons. To remove them, gently clean the marked area with a non-metallic sponge and a mild ceramic-safe cleaning product. Avoid metal scrubbers or harsh abrasive cleaners.
CAN FOOD STAIN THE GLAZED SURFACE?
Glazed surfaces are more resistant to staining, but prolonged contact with strongly pigmented or acidic foods may leave temporary marks. Avoid storing food in OPIECE tableware for long periods. The pieces are intended for serving rather than storage. If staining appears, wash gently with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft or non-metallic sponge.
CAN FOOD STAIN THE UNGLAZED SURFACE?
Some OPIECE pieces include unglazed porcelain surfaces. These surfaces are part of the design language of the collection — tactile, raw, and closer to the material. Unglazed porcelain may be more sensitive to oils, coffee, tea, wine, sauces, berries, beetroot, turmeric, and other strongly pigmented ingredients. Avoid prolonged contact between these foods and unglazed areas. If contact occurs, rinse and wash the piece soon after use.
WHY ARE SOME PIECES SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER?
Every OPIECE piece is handcrafted. Small differences in form, surface, tone, and finish are part of the making process. These variations are not defects. They are traces of the hand, the material, and the firing process — a quiet reminder that each object is individually made.
ARE OPIECE PIECES FOOD SAFE?
OPIECE porcelain tableware is created for serving food and everyday dining. For any technical certification, professional hospitality use, or special requirements, please contact us directly before purchase.
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID?
1. Direct heat sources
2. Stove use
3. Oven use
4. Sudden temperature changes
5. Freezing and immediate reheating
6. Metal scrubbers
7. Abrasive detergents
8. Prolonged food storage
9. Soaking unglazed surfaces for long periods
10. Stacking while damp
11. Dropping or striking the pieces against hard surfaces
HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR SCULPTURAL OR HANDLED PIECES?
Some OPIECE pieces have strong geometric forms, handles, angles, or raised details. These elements are part of the sculptural character of the collection. Handle them with attention. When washing, carrying, or storing, avoid applying pressure to a single edge, handle, or corner. Lift the piece fully and place it down gently.
Made to be used
